Rodents in Singapore

In Singapore we have identified three commonly found rodent species in Singapore. One of it is Norway rats that is also known as brown rat or sewer rat. Another species that commonly sighted is roof rat that can be seen mostly in shophouses or shopping mall. And lastly, house mouse which can be find at most office pantries or nearby food source.

Most common rodents discovered in houses and commercial buildings are usually referred to as rats. The term has acquired a negative meaning throughout history due to rats being the carriers of the deathly plague which is also known as the Black Death.

The Black Death was a devastating global epidemic of deadly plague that struck Europe and Asia in the mid-1300. This plague have claimed more than 20 million people in Europe—almost one-third of the continent’s population.

Rodents are animals that are categorized by a single pair of front teeth that keep growing throughout their lifetime. They are also categorized by their attraction to burrow and dig in the ground to make homes for themselves or search for food sources. They usually have small bodies and long tails. Most rodents survive on a diet of plant material like nuts or fruits, or seeds, but some can have wide-ranging diets such as a tendency towards meat and dairy products.

Rats and mice are productive when it comes to reproducing. Mice can have litters of five or six babies every three weeks and rats can produce litters 15 times per year. Although these pests don’t live long, they don’t have to when they reproduce as much as they do. A single pregnant female rodent invading a home can create a large rodent invasion in no time. That’s also the reason why the Black Death plague can be devastating.
